Provenance :
Estate of Camille Renault (patron)
Camille Renault was a 20th-century art collector and patron. Originally a chef, he developed a passion for painting, decorating his dishes in the colors of Fauvism. In Morocco, he did his military service as Maréchal Lyautey's cook.
In 1925, he opened a restaurant in Puteaux where he welcomed many artists, including Fernand Léger, Albert Gleizes, Jean Metzinger and Picabia. The painters bartered their paintings for 50 or 100 free meals, and the restaurateur offered food in exchange for his own portrait. This was the start of an impressive collection, including 300 portraits by Renault himself.
He also owned paintings by Matisse, Picasso, Le Corbusier, Léger and Villon.
