Maurice DE VLAMINCK (1876-1958) Still life... - Lot 152 - Kahn & Associés
Maurice DE VLAMINCK (1876-1958) Still life with a basket of cherries, circa 1925 Oil on canvas signed lower right. 54 x 65 cm Sale Palais Galliéra, Paris, Maître Binoche, 20 March 1971. A certificate from the Wildenstein Institute dated October 3, 2006 will be given to the buyer. Maurice de Vlaminck, historical fauve painter, switches to a Cézanne classicism around 1912-1913. Although he is essentially a landscape painter, still lifes are also a determining factor in his work. In this simple composition, so traditional in the history of painting, the artist renounces the pure colour of fawns. The shades of brown, which testify to the dark and tormented soul of the artist, are however illuminated by pure white , punctuated by the red of the cherries and the ochre of the basket. But the painting is also a hymn to the simple pleasures of life. The subtle imbalance of Cézanne's compositions suggested by the stability of the table plane, the verticality of the handle and glass, and the tilting and distortion of the basket is revealed. This work of the artist's maturity can be compared to major works such as the Still Life with Bread (1927) and the Côte de bœuf (1926) in the collections of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
